On this course, you’ll experience our slogan “Cityflair & Mountainair” to the fullest – a trail run like no other. Nowhere else are culture and nature, Old Town and mountains, combined so perfectly as on the Salomon Gaisberg Trail. Over these 23.9 km, you’ll run through Salzburg’s historic center while also crossing Kapuzinerberg, Kühberg, Gaisberg, and Nonnberg – nearly all of Salzburg’s “house mountains.” This route is a highlight both athletically and scenically… but it will test every runner to their limits!
The start is in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. You cross the Salzach River, run through the narrow, cobblestoned Steingasse, and turn onto the Basteiweg. The trail then follows the historic city wall up the Kapuzinerberg via the Imberg Steps – a total of 1,718! (yes, you read that right) steps to conquer. At the top, you’re rewarded with a spectacular view over Salzburg and its fortress. The course eases up for a short section along a flowing trail next to the city wall before climbing Kapuzinerberg again. Fast ups and downs on mostly technical singletrails keep the excitement high. Soon, Gaisberg comes into view. After a short passage through the Gnigl district, the long ascent up Salzburg’s iconic mountain awaits. Steep alpine trails, short sections along the popular Gaisberg circuit trail, and a final serpentine climb to the Gaisberg summit challenge you all the way – always accompanied by breathtaking views. At the summit, you can take a short break at the aid station and even watch paragliders take off as you pass by. The route then leads over beautiful trails and technical downhills toward Campingplatz Aigen. The shady Hellbrunner Allee offers some relief, while the narrow streets through residential areas bring you back into the city’s cultural heart. Your legs may ache, but the atmosphere from Kapitelplatz – echoing through the alleys – carries you forward. A final climb up Nonnberggasse rewards you with one last view before you turn into the arena at Kapitelplatz. Now you can proudly say you’ve completed one of Austria’s toughest half-marathons – and done it amidst truly breathtaking scenery.
This trail event is definitely made for adventurers.
